Artist Statement

Nature occurs in bits and pieces…interacting and integrating to create infinite possibilities and opportunities within a single moment. Conceptually the computer mirrors the mind, working in a continuous flux where the only constant is constant change.

My work emerges from this ongoing “state of collage,” this dynamic collection of disparate experience.

I scan objects from the analog world into my computer—rocks, branches, scarves, blankets, my photos, drawings, and paintings. These, in turn, become my digital ‘paintbrushes’ as I use the computer to replicate, generate, and integrate.

As I move between the analog and digital worlds, I feel a centripetal force accelerating and intertwining with my life.

The computer mirrors my desire to visualize the subconscious layering and re-layering of my own mind. In one piece, Café, a woman sits with a china dish, rocks, paper and scissors, each one a symbolic manifestation of her thoughts. In many respects, I am that woman; her thoughts are my thoughts as I paint, scan, store, retrieve, and print.

Working with the computer enhances my experience of viewing life from a subatomic perspective. How does analog talk to digital? The bit give voice to the atom? I often compare the generation of digital DNA to our biological DNA, which is the essence of life itself. And I become the messenger moving between these worlds.

Using the approach of generative art, I create a new image from the original “DNA” source of a primary image, and then replicate it as many times as the artwork needs.

In Lina and Jenna, I constructed the bodies by repeating areas of the painted image. I composed their sky from a single section of a blue t-shirt. From one section of digital DNA I generated an infinite amount of new information – layers of images created by changing the transparency and size of the selection.

In my work, integration pairs the macroscopic view of a globalized world with the microscopic lens of our evolving human awareness that the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of our lives are, in fact, integrated. In Woman Sitting, I used levels of transparency to create the woman as well as integrate her with her surroundings.

Living in the “digital revolution”—with better and faster versions of the Internet, laptops, cell phones, Blackberries and multimedia—correlates with my experience of existence as a flow of evolving protons, neutrons and electrons. The natural outcome is that I compose my work from integrating, generating, and replicating multiple sources and visually ‘speaking’ the unique vocabulary of copy, paste, copy, paste, copy, paste that runs throughout my collage paintings and the digital age of our time.
